The Artistic Community of Los Mamoncillos was founded in 1987 as the Cuban government and UNESCO were declaring the Baconao Park a biosphere world reserve. The artists and their families live, enclosed, in the village of Verraco, some 31 kms from Santiago de Cuba. Los Mamoncillos takes its name from a fruit tree that is found in abundance locally. In August and September, the mamoncillos bears pulpous fruits picked in clusters similar in texture to asian litchis but with a more acid taste.

The studio workshops were quickly transformed into  studio galeries that the tourists are invited to visit. Adding to the pictorials and sculpturals of the artists are ceramics and earthenware created by craftsmen from the community.

The Verraco beach is only 500 meters away.  It is a popular spot with tourists in winter.  Summer sees the beach litterally invaded by Cubans from the region.
